Time To Revive

Almost the new year. Web-inactivity has not translated to actual inactivity. two events have been very successful so far. show in mod 303b and show at red square. big thanks to Cool Scool/Moon Runners/Lewis/Sonatine/Masters and Johnson/Spencer Sult/Inworms/Seahouse/Margy Pepper.

I recently found out that some effort to soundproof the first floor of A-dorm is being made. This space would be used as a practice area for students living on campus. I'm unaware of any specifics but i do know that there is competition for this space as a proposal for indoor bike storage has already been made as well.

Campus wide hold on shows

The school-wide ban on shows should be ignored for smaller apartment/dorm shows. The ban is to take time to re-evaluate security measures at larger, more public shows. If a show you were playing was cancelled, now would be the perfect time to set up your own.

Tips for Practicing On-Campus

The COM building has practice rooms on the second floor, but they are reserved for those in academic programs involving music and the school has a no drum policy for on-campus housing that is new this year. There is no practice space on campus for those who are not involved with a music program. Because of this, the dorms are the only on-campus places to practice. Until things change, practice off-campus if you can. Obviously this is not always possible so here are a few things you can do to minimize unwanted attention.

Cover your drum heads with sweatshirts and fill the bass drum with a sleeping bag or pillows

Substitute your hi-hats for your crash cymbals as much as possible

Practice during the day

Try to let those around you know when you want to practice

Keep doors and windows shut

Remember, loud stereos aren’t against the rules so not all loudness is suspicious

Use your discretion

Sign up for open mic tuesdays at the HCC (get there around 7 to sign up) and use the time to jam or practice playing live

How to set up a show through the school

Here is some info on setting up shows on-campus. this helps avoid wierd noise/occupancy violations, and it is pretty easy to do.

Shows in On Campus Apartments (dorms E-U)
- Go to the front desk at the RAD services office on the 3rd floor of A dorm and get a Party Form. Everyone in your apartment as well as your R.A. will need to sign this.
- Post flyers, let the CPJ know (they can include it on the events page), and tell everyone you know

Common Room shows in A B and C Dorms
- talk to the RA
- make sure no other events are happening in the dorm that night
- Let people on the floor know when the show is happening so they arent surprised by the noise

Student Bands Playing the HCC
- Go to 3rd floor of A dorm and talk to Melissa (shes very helpful and approachable). Her office is located at the back of the floor.
- Try to give as much notice as possible.
- Playing at the HCC provides the possibility of using the schools PA system
- Post flyers, let the CPJ know (they can include it on the events page), and tell everyone you know

Booking non-student bands at the HCC
- Go to 3rd floor of A dorm and talk to Melissa (shes very helpful and approachable). Her office is located at the back of the floor.
- You will need to give Melissa contact information for any non-student bands
- Non-student bands can get paid, but Melissa will need a social security number, address, email, and phone number from the band. There are two forms the band will need to sign and the money will be mailed by the school.
